Joe Mantegna was born to Marry Ann (nee Novelli) and Joseph Anthony, who worked in insurance sales. His mother worked as shipping clerk. He lost his father who suffered from tuberculosis, in 1969.
Joe Mantegna attended the Morten East High School in Cicero, Illinois. He is a graduate of the Goodman School of Drama of the Theatre School at DePaul University). Mantegna was the member of the band - The Apocryphals, for which he used to play bass.
His first act on stage was for ‘Hair’ in 1969. Then, he performed for the Broadway’s ‘Working’ (1976) and won the Tony Award for his performance in ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’.
Mantegna’s first film role was in ‘Medusa Challenger’ in 1977. He has acted for many more films since then, some of them are- ‘Compromising Positions’, ‘Off Beat’, ‘House of Games’, ‘Suspect’, ‘Homicide’, ‘Body of Evidence’, ‘State of Emergency’, ‘Eye for an Eye’, ‘The Wonderful Ice Cream Suit’, ‘Liberty Heights’, ‘Nine Lives’, ‘Naked Fear’, ‘The Last Hit Man’, ‘My Suicide’ and ‘Lonely street’.
However he is best known for his roles in the box-office hits ‘Three Amigos’, ‘The Godfather Part III’, ‘Forget Paris’, ‘Up Close & Personal’ and ‘The Simpsons Movie’. He lent his voice to “Fat Tony” in ‘The Simpsons Movie’.
Mantegna has also done roles for television. He has appeared in shows like, ‘Soap’, ‘Saturday Night Live’, ‘The Water Engine’, ‘The Comrades of Summer’, ‘Frasier’, ‘The Last Don’, ‘The Rat Pack’, ‘First Monday’, ‘Joan of Arcadia’, ‘The Starter Wife’ and ‘Criminal Minds’. He has done the voiceover for “Fat Tony” in ‘The Simpsons’.
Joe Mantegna married Arlene Vrhel on 3 December 1975; they have two daughters Mia and Gina. He is the owner of a Chicago-themed restaurant, ‘Taste Chicago’, in Burbank, California. He himself is the patient of Bell’s palsy, besides being the parent of a child with autism.
Joe Mantegna is the Golden Globe Award nominated actor. He earned the nomination for the award in 1999 in the category of the Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini Series or a Motion Picture for ‘The Rat Pack’.
Mantegna has also been nominated for the Emmy Award as the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie in 1999 for ‘The Rat Pack’ and in 2007 for ‘The Starter Wife’. He was also nominated for the same award in 1997 as the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Special for ‘The Last Don’.
Mantegna was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Los Angeles Italian Film Festival on 26 April 2004. In addition to all these awards, he was nominated for many other awards in various categories and he won many of them.
Role in Criminal Minds
Joe Mantegna is playing the role of “Senior SSA David Rossi” in ‘Criminal Minds’. He came back to BAU after his retirement, to settle some unfinished business. He revealed the reason for his comeback to Sheriff Caulfield. He wanted to find out the killers of a husband-wife, who were beaten to death in front of their children. He had promised the children that he would find out who had done it.
